Candle Care 101: Maximising the Magic of Your Candle
Share
Candles have the enchanting ability to create a warm and cosy ambiance in any space, casting a soothing glow that transforms ordinary moments into extraordinary experiences. However, to fully enjoy the beauty and longevity of your candles, proper care is essential. Welcome to Candle Care 101, where we'll guide you through the art of maintaining your candles, from wick trimming to burn time enhancement.
1. Trim Your Wick: The Wick's Role in a Clean Burn
A clean-burning candle starts with a properly trimmed wick. Before lighting your candle, ensure that the wick is trimmed to about 1/4 inch (6mm). Trimming prevents excessive smoke, soot, and mushrooming at the tip of the wick, leading to a longer-lasting, cleaner burn.
2. First Burn Matters: The Memory Burn
When you light a new candle for the first time, make sure to allow it to burn until the entire surface is liquefied. This "memory burn" prevents tunnelling, a common issue where the candle burns a hole down the centre, wasting wax around the edges. Aim for a burn time that corresponds to the diameter of the candle; for instance, a 3-inch diameter candle might need about 3 hours for the memory burn.
3. Keep It Even: Avoid Tunnelling
To prevent tunnelling in the future, let your candle burn for at least one hour for every inch in diameter. This practice encourages an even burn and maximises the life of your candle.
4. Practice Patience: Between Burns
After extinguishing your candle, allow it to cool and solidify before relighting. This practice ensures that the wax surface remains smooth and even, promoting an efficient burn.
5. Extinguish with Care: The Safe Way to Put Out a Flame
Blowing out a candle can create a burst of smoke and can even dislodge the wick, causing it to drown in the wax. Instead, use a candle snuffer or gently dip the wick into the melted wax and then straighten it back up. This not only extinguishes the flame more gently but also helps to prime the wick for the next lighting.
6. Even Wax Pool: The Key to an Optimal Burn
When burning your candle, aim for an even wax pool that reaches the edges of the container. This prevents the candle from tunnelling and ensures a consistent burn throughout the candle's life.
7. Avoid Over-burning: Safe Burn Time
While it's tempting to enjoy your candles for hours on end, it's recommended to avoid burning a candle for more than 4 hours at a time. Over-burning can lead to overheating, discoloration of the container, and excessive soot.
8. Protect from Drafts: A Steady Flame
Drafts can cause candles to burn unevenly or flicker excessively, leading to an inefficient burn. Place your candle in an area where it's shielded from drafts to ensure a steady and consistent flame.
9. Repurpose Excess Wax: The Last Bit of Magic
When your candle's wick has burned down to about half an inch, it's time to retire it. But don't bid farewell just yet! Repurpose the remaining wax by melting it down and using it as a wax melt in a wax warmer.
10. Safety First: Set the Right Environment
Always place your candles on a stable and heat-resistant surface, away from flammable materials and out of reach of pets and children. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
By following these candle care tips, you'll not only extend the life of your candles but also enhance the overall experience they bring to your living space. With proper care, your candles will continue to fill your surroundings with their mesmerising glow and captivating scents, creating a warm and inviting ambiance that's perfect for any occasion.
